About Mark Rothko
Mark Rothko, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz (1903 – 1970), was a Latvian-born American abstract painter. Originally emigrating to Portland, Oregon in the United States of America from the Russian Empire (nowadays Latvia) with his family, Rothko later moved to New York City. Mark Rothko is best known for his color field paintings that depicted irregular and painterly rectangular regions of color, which Rothko produced from 1949 to 1970. Although Rothko did not personally subscribe to any one school, he is associated with the American Abstract Expressionist movement of modern art, the so-called color field painting movement.
