About the French impressionist Renoir Pierre-Auguste
Renoir (1841-1919) was a French painter known for his impressionism paintings. As a celebrator of beauty and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that "Pierre-Auguste Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau." The female nude was one of his primary subjects. But the oil painting, Two sisters (on the terrace), from the spring of 1881 is seen as one of the most important works from the oeuvre of Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The painting has been in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois in the United States since 1933. The Art Institute of Chicago is the largest museum in the United States of America after the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York als in the USA. Pierre-Auguste Renoir produced 4019 paintings, 105 watercolors and 530 drawings, of which 148 were pastels.
