Latvians were apparently introduced to playing cards by the Swedes, because the word for court cards “Kungs” comes from the Swedish “Kung” (which means “King”). The national card game in Latvia is Solo, also known as Zolite. This is a Latvian point-trick game for three players, related to the German game Schafkopf. Zole tournaments of various levels are held in Latvia, including the Latvian Championship, which has been organized by the Latvian Sole Federation since 1996.
