About Mary Cassatt
Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844–1926) born in Allegheny City (now part of Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania, USA, as the daughter of a wealthy stock and land broker, Robert Simpson Cassat (later Cassatt) and of Katerin Kelso Johnston, scion of a banking family. Mary Cassatt was an American impressionist painter, pastelist and engraver who was best known for her portraits of mothers and children. Edgar Degas influenced Cassatt, he also taught her etching. As a child, Mary Cassatt traveled a lot in Europe, including visits to London in the United Kingdom, Paris is France, and Berlin in Germany. So you could call Mary Cassatt a European American, as she also spent most of her adult life in France and Germany, both in the European Union and returned to the US in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War.
