About Charles de Gaulle Charles
André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (1890 - 1970) was a French army officer and statesman. He fought as an officer in the Battle of Verdun during World War I. And in World War II he led Free France against Nazi Germany and chaired the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946 in order to restore democracy in France. Charles de Gaulle rewrote the Constitution of France and became the first President of France (1959 - 1969 ) of the Fifth Republic which he founded himself. De Gaulle's name lives on in France's largest airport, Aéroport Charles de Gaulle. The busiest square in Paris in France, Place Charles de Gaulle, is also named after him. The Arc de Triomphe is located on this square. And France's only aircraft carrier, the MN Charles de Gaulle, is also named after Charles de Gaulle. Charles de Gaulle was voted the greatest Frenchman of all time by TV viewers in 2005.
